\u00e8 un elemento di transizione redox-attivo, esercita un ruolo importante nella fotosintesi, nella respirazione, nel metabolismo di C e N e nella protezione contro lo stress ossidativo. Come il Fe, forma complessi altamente stabili e partecipa alle reazioni di trasferimento elettronico. Pi\u00f9 del 98% del Cu nelle piante \u00e8 presente in forme complessate e le concentrazioni di Cu2+ e Cu+ liberi sono estremamente basse nel citoplasma. La maggior parte del Cu nel suolo non \u00e8 disponibile per le piante. Il rame esiste nel suolo come Cu2+ e la maggior parte del rame viene assorbito dalla pianta in quella forma.
